Why Hardwired Smoke Alarms Need a Licensed Electrician

Plenty of homes in Brisbane already have hardwired smoke alarms, often older ionisation models fitted years ago. They don't meet the current rules, and they can't simply be swapped for battery alarms from the hardware store.

  • Existing 240V alarms must be replaced with 240V alarms.
  • 240V alarms must be connected by a licensed electrician.
  • New alarms must be photoelectric (AS 3786-2014) and interconnected.
  • Alarms over 10 years old or that fail a test must be replaced.

240V Smoke Alarms: A Job for a Licensed Electrician, Not a Handyman

Hardwired alarms are electrical work, so this isn't a job for a handyman or a DIY kit. Your alarms are fitted by a licensed, fully insured electrical contractor. If they find a wiring problem while they're there, they can sort it out properly.

Hardwired smoke alarm questions

Can I replace a hardwired smoke alarm with a battery one in QLD?

No. The Queensland Fire Department says existing 240V hardwired alarms must be replaced with 240V photoelectric alarms when replacement is needed.

Do hardwired smoke alarms need an electrician in Queensland?

Yes. 240V smoke alarms must be connected by a licensed electrician. Battery alarms with a 10-year non-removable battery can be fitted without one.

Why is my hardwired smoke alarm beeping?

A chirp often means the backup battery is low or the alarm has reached the end of its life. Smoke alarms must be replaced if they're over 10 years old or fail a test, so a beeping older unit is usually a sign it's time to upgrade.

Do I get paperwork for hardwired alarms?

Yes. Hardwired alarms installed by a licensed electrician come with a Certificate of Testing and Compliance.

Can new hardwired alarms connect to my existing wiring?

In most homes the new 240V alarms connect where the old ones were, and extra alarms are added where the rules require them. Your electrician will check the existing wiring on the day.

Hardwired smoke alarm replacement across Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Logan

Our licensed electrician covers homes from Caboolture and Morayfield in the north, through North Lakes, Petrie, Strathpine, Aspley and Chermside, across inner Brisbane and the southside suburbs of Holland Park, Mt Gravatt and Sunnybank, down to Springwood, Shailer Park, Browns Plains and Beenleigh in Logan.

Brisbane homes range from post-war highsets and Queenslanders to 1990s brick estates and new townhouses, and the alarm setup is different in each. Older homes often have a single hardwired ionisation alarm in the hallway, which no longer meets the rules. Newer estates may already have 240V alarms that just need replacing and interconnecting. Your electrician checks what you have and gives you a price for exactly what your home needs, nothing more.
